The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) is essential for assessing a product's climate impact throughout its entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction to recycling or disposal. It tracks greenhouse gas emissions and helps identify and reduce these impacts through targeted measures.
In addition to evaluating product-specific impacts, we also assess the Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF), which reflects the overall impact of the organization. Both PCF and CCF assessments must align with current standards and regulations.
With global climate goals aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, evaluating the carbon footprint of all products and services is increasingly critical. The PCF is thus gaining prominence in this effort.
Carbon footprint calculations differentiate between direct and indirect emissions:
Scope 1 covers emissions directly from company operations, such as fuel combustion and chemical processes. Scope 2 accounts for indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, cooling, or steam, while Scope 3 includes all other indirect emissions, including those from the supply chain and product use.
The product carbon footprint (PCF) procedure is checked during discussions with the team in charge of creating, distributing, and supporting the product both online and in-person.
In the first stage of the audit (done remotely), the team presents the PCF procedure. We go through the basic criteria, talk about them, and plan what comes next. The first audit helps us find areas for improvement or things that need more clarification, and we address them in the second stage.
In the second stage of the audit, we thoroughly check everything on our list and evaluate the results. We closely examine the PCF procedure to make sure it works well. All our findings follow certain rules based on ISO 14067, which refers to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and the GHG Protocol.
Getting certified follows our recommendations to a recognized certification body. An expert from the Validation and Verification team at the certification body looks at the report about how the PCF tool works with respect to the product. If everything checks out, the certifier gives a certificate that says the procedure is right, following ISO 14064-3.
The certificate is usually good for three years, as long as there is no major change in the PCF procedure or certifying body's requirements. After the first year, we have to do a check every year, ensuring the procedure and recommendations are followed.
